Brief introduction of the speaker
Professor Mike Parnwell is presently in South East Asian Geography at the University of Leeds, England, a Geographer specialising on the development process in East and South East Asia. He has worked extensively on several countries of Asia, including China, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam. His research interests include rural development, rural industrialisation, regional development, rural-urban migration, tourism, urbanisation, sustainable development, localism, Buddhism and alternative development. He has published 8 books and approximately 80 articles on a wide range of development-related topics. He speaks Thai fluently, and is also conversant in Indonesian/Malay.

Miss Ulrike Immler is a final year undergraduate student at the University of Leeds where she is studying Chinese with Business Studies. She joins the research trip in China as a part of her post-graduate and PhD training course in inter-cultural Human Resource Management in China.
