Synopsis: The Mediterranean region is a global biodiversity hotspot and also recognized for landscape and food diversity. At the same time, it is disproportionally affected by the climate crisis and multiple other global sustainability challenges. The Mediterranean region represents a particularly valuable microcosm for sustainability science due to its many social-ecological similarities, but also contrasts (for example between North Africa and Southern Europe). This lecture presents social-ecological research and findings from various regions of the Mediterranean region. First, an overview of the land use history of selected Mediterranean cultural landscapes and the landscape values resulting from this land use history will be given. The second part of the presentation explains the main drivers of landscape change in the Mediterranean region, such as drought, forest fires, land abandonment, migration and urbanization. In the last part, potential solutions for land use will be presented, including community-based management at the landscape level, certification and labelling of products, and adapted management practices such as agroforestry and soil-conserving agriculture. The lecture concludes with a plea for biocultural landscape approaches in the Mediterranean region that recognize the diverse relationships between humans and nature in the Mediterranean.
