Overview:

In an era marked by overlapping multiple crises, knowledge production in area studies faces unique pressures, requiring responses to a series of interconnected challenges such as deglobalization, climate change, geopolitical turbulence, and accelerated technological transformation. The field urgently needs breakthroughs in theoretical innovation, methodological renewal, empirical grounding, and a critical global perspective to continuously provide policymakers and the public with cutting-edge, reliable knowledge and professional support. Currently, area studies mainly adopts three models of knowledge production, reflecting the academic community’s differentiated approaches to addressing multiple crises and meeting complex demands. This lecture will systematically review the practices of area studies in Germany and China under multiple crises, and explore ways to advance the high-quality development of area studies through methodological innovations including artificial intelligence, theoretical expansion, rigorous fieldwork, and the construction of a critical world outlook, so as to contribute Sino-German experience and wisdom to global knowledge production.
