About the College of Humanities and
Development Studies (COHD)

The College of Humanities and Development Studies was established in 2002, as a merger of the previous College of Humanities and Social Sciences and College of Rural Development. The college has 194 faculty and a number of adjunct professors including Norman Long, Henry Bernstein, Jan Douwe van der Ploeg, Saturnino M. Borras, Carlos Oya and Jennifer Franco and so on. It has full education programs that cover both undergraduate and postgraduate studies in the disciplines of sociology, management, law, media and communications, language studies. Since 2008, the college started a Master and a PhD program in International Development Studies for students all over the world. Currently, there are 265 master and PhD students, 710 undergraduate students and 90 international students studying in the college.

COHD has 5 departments, including Development Studies, Sociology, Law, Media & Communications and Foreign Languages. COHD dedicates herself to researches in the fields of poverty alleviation and assets building, China development aid, rural community management, community-based resource management, critical agrarian and development studies. These researches have produced huge academic publications, many of which have won national prizes for outstanding social sciences research awards. The researches have also generated a number of policy recommendations that have been endorsed by the central government of China.

COHD has launched a Seminar Series on Critical Issues in Agrarian and Development Studies since 2011, and has organized over 70 seminars till 2016. Speakers are world-class scholars including Teodor Shanin, James C. Scott, Jeffrey C. Alexander, Prasenjit Duara and so on. All the seminars have been transcribed, translated and published in Chinese.


COHD is responsible for the editing and management of Journal of China Agricultural University (social sciences edition).
